first sprite... thoughts?

This is the first sprite I have made. If you think I messed up anywhere, tell me, please. I used the Pokemon Pt. Palmer sprite as my base and I changed his dress pants to blue jeans, his shoes to look like my blue Converse, cut off his cloak to make it like the old US military jacket I sometimes wear (I don't think it was actually used, but I could be wrong.), made his hair lighter, added a bit of my own touch up, put some glasses on him, and changed his smile to a smirk.

For a first sprite, this isn't bad. I mean, it's more of a retooling than anything, but hey, we all start somewhere ^u^
Anyway, as for what I think can be improved, the pants are just a bit too blue. I understand that you're going for blue jeans, but they're a bit too blue. I'd say fade the blue a bit, just to give it a more natural look. Same goes for the jacket, based on what you're going for. Personally, if I didn't know it was supposed to be an old army jacket, I wouldn't have commented on it, since the colors are quite nice, but since I do, I feel that it could just look more worn and faded, just to give it that vibe a bit more. The hair also looks flat due to the lack of shading in it. It is also a bit too yellow for my liking, but it's nothing bad. I think the biggest thing of all that you need to work on is your outlines. They are all black (except for in the hair, where it's all yellowy/orange), which is a big no no in the Pokémon style of sprites. As for how to improve the outlines and shading to a much lesser extent, just analyze official Pokémon sprites and their outlines and shading in relation to where the light source should be located. As for the sunglasses, they're alright. Not much I can really say on them. And the "smirk" doesn't really look like a smirk. Right now, it's a more disinterested look, and I see how you were trying to get a smirk, but that one higher pixel just looks like the shadow under the nose.

Overall, it's not a bad retooling, and for a first sprite, it works. Yeah, you have places to improve, but hey, everyone does (no matter who gets a PERFECT on PAIR because, lets be completely honest, it's not the best review show for sprites out there, but that's a rant for another day ) Anyway, keep up the work, and I can't wait to see what else you make ^^ Sprite on.

Oh, by faded, I didn't mean darker. I ment more pale. That was my bad. Sorry for the confusion.

It does look better, just maybe make the lightest color on the jeans a little bit ligher. -that it looks really cool.

Yeah, I agree with Yria, but otherwise, yeah, looks good. Keep it up ^^

It actually isn't if you look around hard enough, but PAIR dwarfs all the others in sheer size and popularity, but that just makes it more of a problem. Here's this big, well known review place for pixel art, and it isn't even that great at it. But it's done in a way that gets as many reviews in as possible, even if it suffers from actual quality on the reviews itself.
But this is all a rant for another time.
