First Sprite
So this was my first sprite that i did which is made to look like I do in real life. I took the black and white male trainer, removed his bag, and recolored him to look like me and am looking for thoughts on how it looks, especially since it took a long time to get the legs decent. Thanks!

theres 1 problem with it and that its upscaled.
if It wasn't upscaled it would be a good sprite

Re: First Sprite
For a first sprite, this is a pretty good attempt (better than mine, at least), however, there are somethings I see that should be fixed. Firstly, the torso looks weirdly shaped. Along with that, the shading needs some work. In some places, the shading is like a light is shining from right where the observer is looking from, and in other places, it's non existent, like the legs. I also feel like the arm that is going into the hoodie pocket is a little short, but that just might be perspective. Also, you might want to tone down the blond-ness of the hair. It's just a bit garrish, and needs to have a more natural color. You show some promise, and don't let the negative flaws I've pointed out discourage you. We all can keep improving, and we all have flaws in our sprites. Best of luck in your future spriting endeavours. I can't wait to see your next sprite ^^
Llama
you forgot about the upscale

No, I intentionally ignored it because it was simply done so it can be viewed easier. I find nothing wrong with that. Anyways, you'd already mentioned it, so why mention it again?
idk
idk I thought you would say something "besides the upscale here are the other problems"

Well, like I said, I don't find it to be a problem. While I would have preferred to have both the upscaled and the normal sized sprite, just the upscale is fine simply because it takes little effort to down scale it again.
I don't know if you covered this or not llama
something I just noticed is that the legs are a different colour compared to the hand and head that should be fixed.

Re: First Sprite
Thanks for the critiques! After a bit of thought I came to the conclusion that wearing shorts in pokemon is probably not the best idea and changed it to cargo pants, as well as using a more dirty shade of blond on the hair, as well as moving the left arm out a bit to be a better size and shaping the torso and jacket better. Left is before and right is after, both upscaled but with proper sizes underneath.

Re: First Sprite
Maybe try giving the hair a proper dark blonde outline. Does look pretty good for you're first sprite though

This is what that would look like:Yria/Mara LB wrote:Maybe try giving the hair a proper dark blonde outline. Does look pretty good for you're first sprite though
Either I don't have enough hair to make an outline or I have a different interpretation of what you were thinking. And thanks for the advice!

Re: First Sprite
Personally, I liked the shorts. Made the whole design more original. I'd add though--I don't think anyone has said this exactly--that when choosing colors, make sure they aren't "neon" if you get my drift. More faded and subdued coloration works wonders.
Just my two cents.
P.S. I like upscales, too. But using the normal 100% helps in the imagination department, reduces visible flaws. This is to say, we see the sprites more as characters, less as pixels. But feel free to keep posting both sizes.

The shorts
The shorts were good but the only problem I saw with the original is that it was upscaled and that the legs were a different colour compared to the skin.

Re: First Sprite
You're doing a good job trying to fix all the problems people are pointing out, and it really is improving. Keep it up ^^ I know you'll be a great spriter if you do.
Re: First Sprite
So I did do some experimenting with shorts and this is what I've come up with:

The main thing I struggled with to get somewhat right is the leg angles, so some feedback on that would be greatly appreciated!

Re: First Sprite
The leg angles look fine, but the legs themselves looks a little too thick. But the other two things I noticed that you might want to change are:
1) The shading and light source don't quite match up with the traditional Pokemon light source. I suggest you look at other Pokemon sprites and other people's sprites to get a general feel for how it should look. Also, you may want another shade of tan in the shorts, just so you have a bit more to work with.
2) Remove some of the double pixelation from the lines you added in.
Hope these help out.
