SL hacking video and an unanswered question

Post by Ariakai on Thu Oct 20, 2016 11:49 pm

So, this was posted on the SL channel about the general feeling of hacking pokemon and I watched it hoping that it'd address something I've tried (but failed to do) myself, but it didn't, so I figured I'd just come out and ask here if people don't like this practice and if asking for advice on it is a bad idea.

What about hacking event cards?

There are pages online dedicated to .sav files for the event cards that people might miss or not have been around for. This is pretty much the only area I care about far as hacking goes just because personally, I do not view having to go out to physical stores and ask for a code as "playing the game", to me, you progress in a game by sitting down and investing time in the game, but events always feel more like investing in unrelated RL things like gas money or getting a ride from someone which have nothing to do with playing the game. Even if all the events were online, it still means you cannot complete the pokedex if you got the game later or after its gen (because they're usually so much cheaper which is great if you're short on cash) so it's basically just a way for gamefreak to punish people for not paying full price which is incredibly shady. On top of all that, the only reason they still have on-site events is because stores pay money to nintendo for the advertising so it's just capitalistic nonsense instead of any real respect for the players. Maybe said capitalistic nonsense is considered integral to the experience to some people but I do not agree.

Having said that though, I will probably continue to try and find a way to get events that I missed regardless of how people feel about it, but if it's considered a bad topic here I just won't ask about it here.

I will say, though, my interest is purely completing the pokedex and not competing. I don't care about giving a pokemon perfect IVs or whatever, I'd rather breed (I like to breed), and my attitude is that if it can be achieved in-game, I'd rather do it that way. The same goes for event cards. Beyond getting the cards in my game, I don't mind going out and catching the pokemon in the actual game. If I were the type of person who cared about using legendaries (I'm not, because it's too much RNG) then I'd do the soft-reset and IV check like everyone else, but I wasn't sure if just cheating in the event card was considered the same as cheating in the pokemon. (I've seen people say that it is in the past but I'm not about to turn a question thread into a rant without invitation.)

Well, event pokemon actually do not count towards completing the pokedex. So, even with zero events you can still get the shiny charm, and have it be 'complete' as far as the game is concerned.

If you're not going to use any of the legendaries in battles here, then we don't really care, so long as you also don't pass them off in a trade as legit. I personally would still consider them hacked, since the method of obtaining the wondercard that spawns the legend was not legitimate.

You don't? What exactly qualify as "event pokemon" though? Just pokemon for that generation? Or all pokemon classified for events?

Also, what's that mean for ORAS? You can catch pokemon previously only available in events so are they events? Does it specifically apply to what are called "mythical pokemon" and does that definition change with generations?

I can also live with defining an event as hacked, dubious and shady as I think "legit" events are, it is the way the IP holders want people to obtain them so it is at least accurate...just so long as it isn't considered a taboo.

I cannot express how much I am relieved that I just didn't instantly get hounded to death about this. Thanks for that, I'm used to this topic escalating pretty fast. I wanted to ask about it right when I joined and found an old thread about it (but it was about hacking for competitions anyway) but didn't want to possibly start a fight. I think I came off as more defensive than I meant to because of that, I apologize.

It's alright.

Apparently in ORAS Deoxys is required for dex completion- they altered the requirement from XY since it is catchable in game.
Most event only pokemon are called mythical, yes, but it's basically any pokemon in a generation's dex that cannot be encountered in game, or at least not without so external event item (though they didn't do any event item only places in gen 6 for mythical pokemon).

Basically though, all the pokemon they've been giving away this year are, and a few others;
Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Genesect, Meloetta, Hoopa, Volcanion, and Diancie.

Oh that's good, some of those are the ones I'm definitely having the worst time with. I would still like to complete the dex though, if only because those blank spaces drive me insane, but at least I can get the shiny charm through legitimate means. I missed a bunch of pokemon because I didn't feel like playing it last year, ironically, because I was fed up with events hurting my experience. They decided to have the mythical year right then. I wonder if the universe just wanted someone to troll. >_>

I miss when events actually gave you a mini story of sorts though, and you had to catch those pokemon yourself. I think the only reason they don't anymore is because of cherish balls and to prevent people from trying to trade for the ones they don't have on GTS. :/

what about for 4th and 5th gen if you guys remember.  for events instead of getting a code from gamestop you would take your DS and game into the store and get the event wireless in mystery gift. gamestop actually got a DS game cart that would give away the event wireless using a DS in the store.   some people managed to get copys of the DS carts that gamestop would use for events and to this day are able to get past events using the not for resale event carts that nintendo sent gamestop.         So now we all know how cheap and easy it is to buy a DS flash cart that basically runs roms on your DS like they are the real game.  do you guys think it's cheating if you have a real copy of the event carts and use them to get the events and or if you Download a Rom of the event carts and us that to give yourself the events.   at a small pokemon league at a mall I've giving away the shiny event dogs from 4th gen to some people. At much bigger pokemon events I've seen picture in twitter of (Chugga )giving away the deoxes 4th gen gamestop event to other people using his real ds cart of the game. to the game it has 0 way of knowing that your using a flash cart or that the event has been long over due. no hacks or witchcraft was used on the actual game.   is that still cheating ?

Actually that's a good question, it definitely isn't what the developers intended but I can't say it's foul play either. I knew someone who had one of those for gen 4, he didn't steal it or obtain it illegally, he got it from his dad because they were supposed to throw them away anyway.

It's a shame people can't do that anymore though, I think when stuff like that exists, it pressures companies into being more fair. Hopefully the homebrew company can keep that pressure up on gamefreak, otherwise they might be so much worse about events than they are now. (Like not doing any online ones.)

I think you brought this up on the chat, but basically, I would not use events obtained that way for anything official on SL. If you want to use them for fun, sure. I don't know that the events themselves are cheated in this manner, but most places do not allow the use of flashcarts. But honestly, most events given away in that manner are Ubers. Not all, but most (like, for example, the shiny sinnoh dragon trio Gamestop gave away).
There is also very little reason to do so with them redistributing all of the events over this year on wifi- Hoopa, Mew, and Darkai, while initially given out in a store, did get second chance wifi codes, and Arceus will as well (we know what it is but it's not an active code yet).

Not sure why it really matters if it's a legit caught pokemon that came from an official source. (A cart.) and is on a legit copy of the game.

I can't imagine them being that useful though anyway, I don't think you can soft-reset for IVs that easily on them and legendaries are kinda useless in battle anyway unless they're cheated in or gotten through gen 6 where at least 3 IVs are guaranteed to be good.

...plus using like 3-4 legendaries on a team makes people look like tools anyway. Very Happy I run into them on showdown a lot, first thought: do you actually expect to get those legit? Second thought: I'm probably gonna win this match. Few things taste saltier than the few times I lose against them. >.> They probably just hack their pokemon anyway.

I would have to research the IVs aspect of that, but certain events were actually nature-locked, such as the shiny legendary beasts (Entei always being adamant, Raikou rash I think.. and I forget Suicune), but yeah that's something they did that made them less useful.
