2 megas on 1 team?
I'm wondering if it's really a good idea to have a team of 2 potential megas since the showdown rule is 1 mega per battle.
I currently have a mega ampharos and a mega aggron on my team. The mega aggron ends up being handy just because I can basically stall people out or chase out anything that doesn't want to deal with a wall. My ampharos, though, only gets a sp.atk boost when it megas and people in OU switch in fairies a lot on it, but when it can hit, it does hurt.
The benefit is I have 2 potential megas so it makes it hard for people to predict what I'm doing, but the downside is if 1 mega is active, the other isn't, and while my aggron can sort-of hold out without being a mega, my ampharos really cannot. Plus, for any given battle, at least one of them ends up with a wasted item slot so I wasn't sure of its efficiency.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to have a non-electric type on my team. It already technically lacks a dedicated fire-type (it has talonflame but it knows no fire moves and clefable knows flamethrower just for the sake of trolling ferrothorn) and I don't run into many things my ampharos is needed for except to scare off birds. I'd rather not get rid of my ampharos (mostly because it's my favorite electric type) but I might have to pick one mega or the other.
I'm also wondering if there are some other walls I might consider besides aggron, but I mainly use him for utility - stealth rock and toxic - and I tried using excadrill for rapid spin but he was way too easy to KO and outspeed so he didn't fill the niche.
My team roster:
breloom
azumaril
ampharos
clefable
talonflame
aggron

It isn't showdown's limitations it's the game's limitations of having 1 mega.
It is viable if you're playing in a 3v3, where you choose 3 out of your 6 available pokémon. In a 6v6 it can have its benefits, like being immune to knock off, trick and switcheroo. However it takes away a valuable item slot, so it really depends - if the item on the pokemon isn't important you can run it no problem.

I didn't know knock off didn't work on mega stones. Does it only count after the mega takes place or can it work before?
I don't really think either pokemon would benefit from an item boost more than their potential mega evos offer anyway, I do like having the potential for both of them because one gets a lot of defense, the other gets a lot of special attack, and it makes it hard to guess which of my pokemon will go mega so I might leave it as it is and just try to switch up their moves a bit instead.
I have seen people use more than 1 mega in online matches recorded on video though, how are they doing that? (I don't think they're hacking, the pokemon still transform when they enter the field.)

Knock off, trick, switcheroo, thief and all other similar moves don't work on mega stones in any capcity, no matter if they mega evolve or not.
If you saw people using 2 megas on showdown it was probobly some tier like hackmons. If you saw it in an ingame battle it was probobly hackmons as well (before you freak out, hackmons only work in local battles aka when you are with someone in person).

Why would I freak out?
I guess that could've been it though, they did legitimately mega-evolve but it might also be something that doesn't apply to local battles.
It's good to know there is some benefit to having 2 megas though, I can basically play mind games with someone by making them unsure of which I'll use and even them realizing they can't knock off one pokemon's mega stone (telling them I have one) doesn't tell them which is gonna come out.
