Re: Silver League Sprite Contest [archived]
Well this is a very nice sprite, it fits very nicely in the NES style of sprite. The first thing I notice that is wrong however is that it is 33x29, which means it is one pixel over the limit, this is something that can very easily be fixed however. The only other thing I can see wrong is the right foot as the bend could have been done better. Other than that it might have been better to make the belt blue at the expense of the brown, though it is a design preffrence and doesn’t take away from the design.Jathavan wrote:
I get what you're saying but blue shoes would look weird and i didn't have any spare colours and brown shading for the hair I felt would work

As I said, it's a design choice and it doesn't take away from the grade.

They look like they might be 56x56.. though some might be 64x64. Definitely not larger though.
(Large bossmon like Steelix and Rayquaza are rendered as many parts).

Not bad at all. I can tell this is a mod off the original Ranger Tyranitar sprite, but you did more than enough to differentiate an add to it. For the most part it looks good, though I take issue with the lowest back spike- the shading on it with the highlight just isn't right. Also, I take issue with the angle of the spike on the front leg, as it should not be pointing down like that.BetaX wrote:

I sorta feel that this sprite is a little large for the scale (It is within the size, though not that many really fill the whole space.) Regardless, it's fairly good, though I am unsure why you put highlights on the back, but not on the head. The sprite's clearly not backlit, so it makes little sense. That's about the worst I can say about it though, so overall, good job.CrimsonIgnis wrote:

On the flipside, this feels a tad small. It's not too too small for Rangers, just that most are bigger. Anyway, for the size that it is, you did good to make it work. I think the only thing I can really point out is that the leaf gets somewhat muddled with the outline of the body.KittenCutie1 wrote:

I can tell that this is also a mod off the original Gengar sprite. What bothers me right away is the third 'eye' on the middle of its head; it really just doesn't look round enough. Also, the line forming the top of the nearest head spike is jagged in places. The change to red is a bit stark, but I can let that pass because I understand how color limits would limit options for fixing that. Speaking of coloring though, and the headspike- that highlight there is definitely misplaced.

Man, I almost forgot to submit this but here it is, Noivern. I tried getting the pallet to be 15 colors like the PMD mugshot, but I have a version with more than just 15 colors if you'd like to see it instead.

My turn to judge~
This is fairly good. The shading is consistent although the shading on the back fins looks off. It's just straight when it should curve around to fit the shape better. The fin on the side of the head doesn't seem accurate. You also could have used more shades in order to fit the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon style better, but other than that, it's a decent sprite.
B+
Not bad, but there are a few flaws. You could've gotten away with having the goopy stuff under its chin a slightly darker color because as it is now, it blends into background and makes it hard to distinguish. There are also some issues with the shading. You have a highlight on the head, making the light source look like it's coming in from the top right. But then there are highlights on the top left side of the large antennae, making the light source look like it's coming in from the top left. There's too little use of a darker shade for shadow, much less multiple shades in order to fit the style. The outline looks like it's double pixelated as well. Even though it's technically the style, it looks off, especially with the lack of multiple shades. Anatomically, the eye is too small and the small antenna that's farther away is larger than the one that's closer to us when it should be the other way around due to perspective. The head also doesn't look attached to the neck, but that can be fixed by getting rid of some pixels and making the space between the neck and the head open instead of closed.
C
Overall, this sprite came out pretty nicely. You have enough shades to fit the style, but the shading looks awkward in places. The outline also looks double pixelated because the two shades used are a bit too close together. It also makes the outline appear jagged and squared off in places instead of sharp.
B+
I can tell this is the sprite from Charizard. Overall it looks good. The shading is decent, however there are a few flaws. There's a highlight on the back of the wing that shouldn't be there. It should be shadow instead to keep the light source consistent. The fire could be fixed, too, with maybe making the center bigger and adding a highlight shade and coloring the outline blue instead of gray.
