Road to a custom trainer sprite

Post by Capta1n_Henry on Thu May 26, 2016 8:11 pm

I'm on the road to make a custom trainer sprite for myself by blending other trainer sprites together. I blended my re-colored Gambler with Blaine from HGSS. I put Blaine's cane and arm onto the Gambler and I was wondering if there was a problem with the anatomy that I'm not seeing.

EDIT: Renamed the thread because I don't want to make a bunch of other topics just to get my sprite critiqued

You recolored Blaine's sleeve appropriately but the hand isn't the same skin tone as the face; something to keep in mind. The cane's shadow tone is also too similar to the mid tone so it's difficult to make out the cane's shape. Try a darker hue for the shadow.

As for the blend, you did rather well. I might think the sleeve sew lines should be that same grayish color as is seen on the other places of the coat, however. That being said, I don't think Blaine's sleeve is right for this. The Gambler's left arm is far too thin in comparison. I would either recommend trimming the sleeve or using a different sprite's arm that share's this angle.

With all of that said, I do like where this is going. I couldn't say where exactly that is this early, but I'm inclined to say this will turn out rather well once 100%.

I tried my best to trim the arm cause' I'm lazy and don't want to go looking for another arm to use. I think I got sloppy on the colors but I don't know how to fix it.

Made an edit to the cane. Now I'm trying to make it into a mega scepter.

Kinda fixed the mega stone in the cane to match the angle. Kinda tempted to call it finished now because this is really I had envisioned. Feedback would be helpful.

Well you've ground out the right sleeve well enough and used the gray shading so that I have no issue with it. I do quite favor this mega staff of yours. It would be interesting if you were to add a few more design quirks or edits to this sprite, however, for a little more originality in terms of aesthetic design. Even so, this is just fine.

In my opinion, the coat looks a little bland. If this character is someone important enough to be equipped with mega evolution, I think the coat should have more design. Again, that's just my opinion. But, overall, the sprite looks just right.

I agree with Verys, though for an early sprite, it's alright. Keep up the good work, and I'm sure you'll be great Smile

Honestly I have no idea what to do to make him more original. I mean, that's really all that I had in mind when I was thinking about making my own sprite.

There's truly no need for more if this was your desire. After all, my own image is barely more than a splice of N and Riley but I have zero intention of changing that. Maybe a revamp along the way, but still.

Though if you are looking for possibilities... I noticed your Lucario's coloration is based on the "shiny" variant of the one is Pokken. Perhaps there is something to incorporate from that game to possibly add a connection between yourself and the Ferrum Region? Just an idea if you're looking for one.

Meh, I think I'll just leave him like that for a while until I can remake him from scratch. Thanks for the replies guys.
