Pokemon Yellow Rescue Team

This adventure is going to be MSPA* style. If you are not familiar with MSPA, this means that I am telling the story and the actions the characters take must be suggested by you. Yes you, the human person reading this right now! Simply submit commands in your post, putting >>>> before the command. I will give you a word of warning; choose your words very carefully. I can interprete your commands however I want, so beware of mispellings, words with multiple/ archaic meanings and ambiguous phrasing. Also this will be text based only unless I suddenly decide to put a panel in; I give you full warning, my artwork is terrible and I make no promises about its quality/ legibility.

Now that we have that out of the way, LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED! However, we have a slight problem. I have literally none of this adventure planned out in advance. I am being completely serious. I decided I was going to do this adventure less than a week ago have purposely not thought about it since so... Who do you fellas think our first two characters should be?

Since it is a Yellow Rescue Team, I vote Pikachu for sure. As for a second... perhaps Treeko?

I forgot to mention that no starters and no flagship Pokemon are allowed to be the starters. Also, the starters need to be at their first stage of growth and be able to morph (evolve is such a bad word).

Since this is still a 'Yellow' adventure, how about we try another 'mon of Pikachu's coloration... like Abra! A nice partner, hm. Perhaps Larvitar? That way this story could be like a fanfic prelude to the team in Blue/Red Rescue Team, the one with Alakazam, Charizard, and Tyranitar.

All there is a mesh of warm colors that do not have names, for they have never been witnessed before. He blinks twice; his eyes focus. "Perfect," he says, not even aware that he has spoken the only word that applies to what is before him. The very slimmest sliver of the sun has been uncovered by the opaque greenness that is the forest beneath it. Its pure whiteness diffuses into the sky so that every shade and every hue presents itself to him: crimson, rose, tangerine, auric, saffron, jaundice, copper, aquamarine, azure, sapphire, lavender, mauve. Each stands proud as its own distinct beauty while simultaneously surrendering their entirety to the whole. He rises, as if he were paying respect to the queen of beauty that has honored him with her presence.

He extends his limbs in perfect tandem. The well practiced and ideally executed move propels him into the cooling air, making a sound that is audible to him alone. He flies forward 'til he reaches Jacob's Rock. He enters the column of heated air and feels the sudden, familiar push of a thermal under his wings.  He waits, biding his time. When he feels that he has just barely entered the apex, he folds his wings to his chest in such a way that he is sent into a leisurely spin. He closes his eyes and becomes weightless. The warm air spreads across his back in order to embracing him as only a father can. For the first time since he last preformed this ritual, his ears can relax; there is no sound for them to detect. At the very moment he starts to descend, he completes his spin by spreading his wings. Not an ounce of momentum as been lost. He enters a lazy glide toward the blue roof of Pelippers' postal office.

Today is this young Noibat's 12th birthday. He has lived a happy life in his hometown. However, his life is characterized by a lack. Not a lack of friends or health; it is a lack of a much subtler kind. Absence has been a trickster. It has giving this boy everything with one exception; the one element that provides meaning to all the others. All are destined for greatness, and the element most critical to achieving that greatness has been cruelly seized from him. He has never tasted its bitterness, nor the sweetness only it can deliver. That is, until today. Today what he has been lacking will be thrust upon him. Many would reject this gift; others would revel in it. He is one of the few that will accept it with the reluctance required. What is this boy's name?

Could you please explain? I think character names are really interesting and important. Authors have almost infinite possible names to choose from, each with there own cultural associations and meaning. Why a specific character was given a specific name is always interesting to me.

Well, it's pretty shallow reasoning to be perfectly honest. Noibat is, of course, a bat; a nocturnal creature that frequents the world while the sun is replaced by the moon. 'Moon' also does sound like a youthful name to me, and this Noibat appears quite young.

....Moon gently lands in front of Pelippers' Postal Service. Moon hastily enters the towering structure as sunlight pours through the many windows in order to illuminate his destination; the section of the front desk reserved for customers collecting packages. With great eagerness Moon asks the Pelipper stationed there, "Is it here! Huh, huh! Come on! Its gotta arrived already!"

....In a dry voice that has clearly rehearsed these lines, Pelipper answered, "Your package will arrive in 14-21 business days. Without forming any verbal contracts and without representing Pelipper Postal Services, this employee of Pelipper Postal Service suggests customers not inquiring of their package every day for a week since an order has been placed."

....After listening to the scolding, Moon looks down and says with a hushed tone, "Oh. I didn't mean to be a bother. I am sorry for my behavior."

...."Hi Sorry-For-My-Behavior, its nice to meet you." The clerk and Moon both give a black stare towards the Shuppet standing behind Moon. "Sorry. I just couldn't resist."

....Moon apologizes again; as if the interruption rendered his previous statements invalid. "Sorry again. I think that I will just go home now."

...."Naaa, I'm just messing with yea!" The clerk interjects as he drops his formal demeanor. Moon's face lights up at the news. "It arrived about an hour ago. I will just need you and your partner to sign for it."

...."My partner..."

...."You do have a partner, don't you. I mean, the Global Rescue Team League can't go giving Starter Packages to anyone who asks. Jobs can get pretty dangerous."

....Once again, Moon lowers his eyes. "I thought that was a recommendation, not a requirement."

...."Oh, I am sorry then. Without a partner I cannot give you this package." Moon sniffles, trying to hold back tears.

...."I will be his partner." The clerk and Moon suddenly look origin of the voice; now with surprise instead of resentment.

...."What! I cannot form a Rescue Team with some strange Shuppet I meet at a post office."

...."Why not?"

....Stuttering, Moon replies, "We... we don't have a base to live in?"

....With a calm that is comedic in contrast to Moon's disbelief, the Shuppet replies, "Then we will find a base to live in."

...."What if we don't!?"

...."Then we will be uncomfortable when sleeping."

...."What if we don't work well together!?"

...."Then we will learn how to work together."

...."What if we fail every job we take!?"

...."Then we will find another way to make money."

...."I don't even know your name!"

...."It is written on the document behind you." Moon turns around and sees a floating Pidgeot quill next to a signature make with impressive calligraphy. What is written on the line marked 'Founding Member #2'?

...."Booba? That's a weird name. Anyway, can we take the Starter Pack now?"

...."As soon as I get your signature."

.... Without waiting a second, Moon signs the paper. "Thank you!" Moon says a moment before he runs out the door. He places the package on the ground and tears it opens it. In it he finds a metal badge, a world map, a Wonder Orb, 10 Geo Pepples, 2 Oran Berries and 1 Reviver Seed. "Cool! a Silver Badge!"

...."Its not silver." Booba says. "It's zinc. Anyway, let's pick a job to do." They both head over to the Job Board and find only 3 jobs available. The first was posted by a Skitty named Andrew looking for an escot to the next town over; she offered 150 PokeDollers (PD) as payment. Next is a Tirtouga named Rufus who got lost in Amber Forest and is offering a Pecha Berry to whoever can help him get home. Finally, an Evasion Orb is offered to anyone who can gather some flowers from the source of Woodland Creek and deliver them to a Cleffa named Lamar. "This one looks like a good chose for our first job," Booba decides with a smile.

....The new Rescue Team walk through town, quickly passing Jacob's Rock, Kecleons' Shop, Ledian and Jumpluff's Inn, Silver Diver Lake and Marowak's Training Center. The reach the crossroads and see Andrew the Skitty to their left, the road to Amber Forest ahead of them and the dirt path that leads to Woodland Creek to their right. What direction do they go?

I vote to the left, for the escort mission. Skittys (Skitties?) are probably very generous. Might offer a bonus reward as well.

I was wondering how violent you wanted this story to be. Imagine if one character with -6 Defense was hit by a critical, x4 effective, +6 Attack, STAB Dragon Claw; a second character rushes the first to a doctor. The doctor is talking to both of them when the first character becomes stable. Which way would you prefer that scene be written.

So, do would you guys want me to written the first way or the second?

Well, here's the thing. The first edition isn't particularly violent as the doctor is only talking about the injury. Should we have seen that wound being created, well it would be a different story.

But my preference is the second edition. After all, it's more pleasant to see doctors not scaring what little life is left in their patients by explaining how easily they could have died. As for whether or not violence levels should be kept low or bumped up to eleven is your call, but I still recommend keeping it relatively realistic just not excessively so.

...."Hi! Are you my escorts?" Andrew the Skitty asks in a cheerful tone.

...."Yeah. Are you all ready to go?" Moon said in an equally cheerful tone.

...."Yup! Let's go, I want to get there before dinner time."

....The trio start down the cobblestone road to Ringville. Everyone walks with a bounce in their step. After about an hour Booba and Andrew start to play 20 Questions because nothing too eventful had happened to them yet. Yet.

...."Can you travel without touching the ground?" Andrew asks.

...."No..." responds Booba.

...."Can you dig under the ground?"

...."No."

...."Do you need an item to grow up?"

...."Yes. Careful, you have only 5 questions left," Booba warns with a sly grin on his face.

...."Is the item you need a stone?"

...."Yes."

...."Is the name of your stone also a type?"

...."Yes."

...."Hmm... Do you have any legs?"

...."If I can't fly or float then I must have legs!"

....Andrew quickly corrects Booba's mistake. "Nu-uh! You could just flop around like a Magicarp."

....After a moment Booba says in a funny voice, "True. But is that REALLY traveling?"

...."Yes," retorts Andrew.

....In a dry voice Booba states, "Fine. Yes, I do have legs."

...."Are you a Fire type?"

...."Nope." They begin to conversing at an ever increasing pace.

...."Are you a Water type?"

...."Yes."

...."Do you have 2 types?!"

...."No!"

...."Do you walk on 4 legs?!"

...."Yes!"

...."Are you a Vaporion?!"

...."Yes!" Finally able to take a breath, Booba inhales deeply. "So, that’s 2-3 now right?"

...."Idunno. I never keep score."

.... Moon enters the conversation upon seeing the natural breaking point. "Now that that is done, we have some business to discuss. Namely, what moves do you know? I have got Supersonic, Gust, Bite and Leech Life."

....Andrew interrupts while trying to suppress some laughter. "What! You do not know Tackle! Even I know Tackle!"

.... Moon bows his head and rubs his eyes. "I cannot believe I am going to actually have to explain this to you. This is like the first thing you learn after learning to walk straight. The order is how to walk, the Rule of 4, how to not drool."

...."You don't have to be so mean about it," Andrew mumbled softly.

...."Eerr, sorry. Anyway, any Pokemon can only remember 4 moves at a time," Moon explains while accenting the word 'remember' with air quotes. "If you try to remember any more than that, then your muscle memory gets all mixed up."

....With genuine curiosity, Andrew asks, "What is muscle memory?"

...."It is when your body knows how to do things without you having to think about it. Like..." Andrew scans the surrounding area for a practical example. "...like walking! All you have to do is tell your body to walk forward and it walks forward." Moon glances over at Andrew and notes his puzzled expression. After a moment on contemplation, Moon speaks. "Hey Andrew, can you say the ABCs backwards?"

...."Uhh.. o.k., but what does that have to do with anything?"

...."Humor me."

...."What?"

....Moon releases a deep sigh. "Just do it."

...."Fine. Z X Y W... V U...... n o p q... S T R..."

...."That's enough. Now, how many steps did you take while you were saying that."

...."How am I suppose to know?! You did not tell me to count steps?!"

...."That is exactly my point! You were able to walk without thinking about walking. Since your body could walk all by itself, your mind could focus on other things. That's muscle memory! In battle, you need to pay attention to a lot of things; what will I do next, how could he counter, what moves does he have, what moves does he not know that I have, what is the terrain like, is there a surprise attack coming towards me and lots of other stuff. If you had to think about how to do a move on top of all of that, you would get overwhelmed in even a moderately tough battle. Therefore we have to use our muscle memory. There is just a slight drawback to muscle memory; there is a limit on how many actions your body can remember without getting them mixed up. Imagine using Low Kick when you meant to use Double Kick; or using Scary Face instead of Leer. Even worse, you can mix up non-moves with moves. If you were playing tag and accidently Flame Charge someone, how exactly would you explain it?"

...."Yeah, that would be embarrassing."

...."Now that we have gotten that out of the way, what are your moves Booba?"

....Booba is startled out of his thoughts. "Huh, what did you say? I was studying the clouds."

...."They all always look like Castforms to me," Andrews jokes.

...."What are your moves? Mine are Supersonic, Gust, Bite and Leech Life."

...."I've got Knock Off, Will-O-Wisp, Night Shade and Screech. We could do a nice Screech-Bite combo in our first battle. We can call it The Screeching Bite!"

...."Sounds like a plan! Andrew, how much farther is it to Ringville?"

....Andrew declares, "About 2 hours from here there is an old bridge. You can see Ringville from there."

....Adds Booba, "Let's get going. I am worried that it might rain soon."

I am sorry I have not updated in months. There is no excuse. I am going to post something soon, next Friday at the latest, and then I will try to update more regularly. Again, I am sorry.

....Many clouds of strange shape blocked the diminishing light of the retreating Sun by the time the party reached a treacherous, wooden bridge barely as wide as the road. The eerie, decaying planks, which are littered with cracks and holes, appear marginally sturdier than the uncanny support beams that wear a blanket of mold or the fragments of untrustworthy railing separate pedestrians from the hostile river below.

...."This is the bridge that leads to Ringtown. We simply walk over it and we'll be 5 minutes away." declares Andrew over-optimistically.

...."I do not trust those clouds. They look to me like they will unleash a torrent any second." comments Booba as he stares at the evening's darkening sky.

...."I am not going to worry about it. I could fly through a storm like this with Flaaffy wool super-glued on my ears! Heck, I have slept through worse storms as a baby balancing on the top of trees!" interjects Moon.

...."Hopefully, it will not hit us." comments Booba. "I know! Let's take our minds off of it with a race. The first one across the bridge wins! Moon, are you in?"

....With a large smile, Moon answers, "Of course! Everyone line up on the first plank. Good. We'll count down from 5 and go on 1." He turns to Andrew and asks, "Would you like the honors?" Andrew nods eagerly.

...."5!" Andrew shouts in his most authoritative voice.

...."4!" Moon stares at the other side of the bridge, anxious to finish his first job on a rescue team.

...."3!" Booba looks up again, worried about the coming storm.

...."2!" Everyone tenses their muscles in preparation.

...."Wait! What's that?" said Andrew as he points to something in the distant. When Moon and Booba turn their heads to look, Andrew recognizes his chance to strike. "1!" Andrew runs off with the speed of a Voltorb on a hill.

...."Hey! That was a cheap trick!" Moon complains.

...."You had better hurry up. I am almost half way there." The fleeing Andrew yells louder than an injured Litleo. Suddenly the floor violently explodes, blasting a corona of a thousand wooden daggers everywhere. "Eek!" shrieks Andrew, who was no longer on the ground. Something clutches Andrew like a Kingler's claw and expertly binds Andrew's legs together painfully by the ankles with coarse rope. Moon and Booba are standing frozen as statues, trying to process what has happened.

.... The enemy stands at about 3 feet and is enveloped in a blood red clock. An aura of malicious intentions seemed to saturate the very air near it. Even the small Skitty's bodyguards could feel the inescapable sense of dread despite being 10 feet away from the villain. The enemy yanks Andrew up by his stretched ankles and wrapped his pale, orange arms around the helpless youngster.

....Moon was the first to act. "Hey! Stop!" he yells at the cloaked figure, with barely enough of a quiver in his voice to give away the fear he unsuccessfully represses. Although the enemy's face is hidden by the pitch-black cave that is the cloak's hood, it was apparent to everyone that it was smiling.

....The shadowed figure makes a sound for the first time since leaping through the floor. "There is no need for me to beat you two into pulp, but orders are meant to be followed. That is how professionals do it." Its voice was deliberate and calculated, only as loud as needed. "If you flee after taking a punch or two, my orders would be fulfilled," the confident Pokemon offered without a hint of sarcasm. "I am serious. Finishing an operation ahead of schedule is looked upon favorably."  It then forcefully tosses Andrew into the bridge's splintered support column as if he were nothing more than a rag-doll.
